Turtle Island Recycling Corporation

Turtle IslandTurtle Island is one of the leading recycling and waste management companies in Ontario. Established in 1990 by entrepreneurs Ted Manziaris and Louis Anagnostakos, Turtle Island now employs over 250 people and services over 2,000 industrial and commercial customers and over 220,000 residential customers and growing. The operations of Turtle Island as well as its main transfer station are located in a 60,000 square foot facility in downtown Toronto.  Turtle Island now operates facilities in Aurora, Chatham/Windsor and Caledon/Orangeville, Ontario.

Turtle Island provides waste and recycling services to municipalities and residential customers as well as waste management, recycling and material recovery, product destruction, demolition services and confidential shredding services to industrial and commercial customers. Waste management consulting and audit services are also provided to customers with the aim of avoiding waste generation where possible and increasing the level of material recycled.

Turtle Island owns a significant interest in EIL Environmental, a hazardous waste recycling business located in Edmonton, Alberta.

In 2011, Turtle Island was acquired by GFL Environmental.

Avo Photonics
Founded in 2004, Avo Photonics provides advanced contract manufacturing services for photonic and microelectronic customers in the communications, military, aerospace, medical and industrial markets. Avo's mission is to develop competitive manufacturing solutions for customers by providing comprehensive support from Design to Production.

Located in Horsham, PA., Avo Photonics designs products using in-house expertise in System, Optical, Mechanical, Thermal, Electrical/RF and Materials engineering. This design capability is supported by a complete suite of modeling tools ensuring that products are ready for immediate prototyping as well as supporting high-volume production.

In 2011, Avo was purchased by Halma plc.

Teranet Income Fund
Teranet has built a reputation as a leader in the delivery of electronic information services; by creating the world's first electronic document land registration system and operating Ontario’s Electronic Land Registration System. Whitecastle was a founding investor in Teranet's parent company and was active on its Board of Directors until the company went public in 2006. In 2008, the company was aquired by OMERS.

Genus Medical
Genus Medical designed, manufactured and distributed medical devices for the home care and rehab markets worldwide. Genus was founded in 1992 as an amalgamation of several small businesses. Whitecastle provided the initial funding and a follow-on investment to finance growth. By 1994 Genus achieved distribution throughout Europe and was dominate in its market in North America and in 1995 the company was sold to Invacare. During this period Whitecastle was very active in helping the company manage its growth, including assisting in executive recruitment, financial modeling, strategic planning and serving on the Board of Directors.

Positron Fiber Systems Corporation
Positron Fiber System Corporation rapidly grew to become a leading manufacturer of telecommunications equipment for high reliability and critical service applications. Established in 1995 under the name Positron Fiber System Corporation and its French version, Corporation Systems de Fibres Positron, we together with Quorum Growth Inc. and Innovatech, invested the first seed capital in the company in August 1995.

Eph Diamond, Chairman of Whitecastle Investments Ltd., served on the Board and the audit committee and the Whitecastle team was active in helping guide the company through its first year as a public company on the TSE and NASDAQ. In addition, Whitecastle helped guide the company's September 1998 sale to RELTEC Corporation (NYSE:RLT), known today as Marconi Communications Optical Networks - a US leader in telecommunication systems.

Electrophotonics Corporation
Electrophotonics Corp. was an innovative developer of components and modules for optical networks. Their products spanned the range from Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) components, dispersion equalization modules and network performance monitoring subsystems.

In June 1999, Electrophotonics was acquired by E-TEK Dynamics Inc (NASDAQ: ETEK) of San Jose, California. E-TEK is a leader in the design and manufacture of passive optical network components and modules for fiber optic systems. In January 2000, E-TEK and JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU; TSE: JDU) announced the signing of a definitive merger agreement.

We provided initial venture capital funding to Electrophotonics in February 1998.

IMagicTV Inc.
IMagicTV, a New Brunswick based software company incorporated in January 1998, forged a new niche in the overall telecom communications software market by offering service providers an open and flexible platform for creating, delivering and managing digital television and rich media services over broadband DSL networks. Its software enabled services such as digital TV, pay-per-view and video-on-demand, and featured field-proven provisioning tools for managing content, subscribers and client devices, easily and efficiently. In 1999 Whitecastle led an equity financing of $10 million to support iMagicTV's aggressive growth plans and contributed to a pre-IPO financing in 2000. In November 2000 iMagicTV became public on NASDAQ and TSE. In April 2003 Alcatel (NYSE: ALA) acquired 100% of iMagicTV and iMagicTV now operates under the Alcatel name.

PC DOCS Group International Inc.
PC DOCS is a leading worldwide provider of open document management systems for enterprise networks, the Internet, and corporate Intranets. In June 1993, we invested together with a consortium led by Quorum Growth Inc., in a company that ultimately became PC DOCS Group International, with listings on both the TSE and NASDAQ.

Carey Diamond was active as a Director of PC DOCS from 1993 to 1997. The Board was especially active, directing PC DOCS through a corporate restructuring, operational turn-around and subsequent successful secondary public offering. Carey also served as a member of the Compensation Committee. In June 1999, HUMMINGBIRD (now OpenText) acquired PC DOCS Group International.

Broadband Networks Inc.
Broadband Networks Inc. was a leader in the design and manufacture of broadband wireless networks operating at frequencies of between 2 and 42 gigahertz (GHz). Founded in 1994, BNI skyrocketed in 3 short years in this expansive new market sector - deploying systems in Canada, U.S., Europe, Asia and Latin America.

We provided the first venture capital in 1996 and were very active in helping this dynamic young company handle its explosive growth, including assisting in executive recruitment, financing, mergers and acquisitions and strategic planning. BNI, headquartered in Winnipeg, Canada, under Whitecastle’s direction, attracted strategic investment from both Newbridge Networks and Siemens.

In 1998, just prior to an anticipated IPO, BNI was sold to Northern Telecom (NYS:NT). It was the first significant acquisition that Nortel had made. Whitecastle was retained by Broadband Networks Inc. to negotiate the sale.

Loran International Technologies Inc.
Located in Ottawa, Loran was founded in 1992 as a systems integrator of high-speed networks. While integrating networks for more than 350 leading organizations, they identified critical needs in these organizations' management tools. Loran began developing their patented product, Kinnetics, to address these needs in 1995.

In April 1998 we provided Loran with venture capital to accelerate their expansion globally. In July of 1999 with our involvement, Loran Systems entered into a strategic relationship with Peregrine Systems - a leader in infrastructure management software. In August 2000 Loran was acquired by Peregrine Systems.
